Profile Photo Editor

So I made another tech for good thing – Profile Photo Editor.

I know I know, not the sexiest of names, but it does the job.

It started when I saw Courtney Summer’s post on LinkedIn:

Introducing the ✨#Desperate ✨ banner 🫶🏼 There’s been a lot of discourse about how the hashtag#OpenToWork banner puts off recruiters and hiring managers, because it makes you come across as desperate. Frankly, as a victim of redundancy, I am desperate, and I don’t think that’s anything to be ashamed of. Being laid off doesn’t reflect a lack of skills, talent or work ethic - it’s just bad luck. No one should be embarrassed that they need to pay their rent and bills, support their family, or feed themselves. Wear your hashtag#OpenToWork banner with pride, because to me, it just shows that you’re strong, resilient and optimistic - qualities any employer would be lucky to find.

Love this! Love how Courtney took on the #opentowork stigma and made it her own. Indeed, nothing to be ashamed of trying to find a job after a layoff. We all need to make a living, and the current layoffs are more of a response to economic outlook than our capabilities.

With her on this 🫡

So much so in fact, I felt inspired to make a fun little tool for anyone who wants to stand together with this!

Introducing… the Profile Photo Editor, a profile photo editor to make LinkedIn-inspired banners on your profile pics.

Check out my current profile pic 😆

Best part - you can make it for just about anything… opentowork, desperate, indie hacker, solopreneur… or for any cause you want people to be aware of:

Making this was harder than I thought. Messing with HTML5 Canvas was tricky, so tricky that even Claude Sonnet 3.5 couldn’t solve it. Took 2 days in total to make the canvas work. First time using a combo of Llama 3.1, Claude Sonnet 3.5 and ChatGPT, but the trickiest parts were mostly solved by Llama 3.1. Looks like Claude is better for languages with more conventions, not more uncommon stuff like canvas, while I’m pleasantly surprised Llama 3.1 can deliver on it! Learned new things.

Now, should this new project have a snazzier name, or boring names for the win??

Anyhow, I had fun with it, and you have fun with it!

That’s cool Jason!
On the topic of the LinkedIn badge, I think I am torn between the two ideas (pro and against). But I am a hiring manager, not a recruiter.
Now, I am intrigued about how you are working with the 3 models, especially LLama. Are you running it locally with Ollama? Do you have a special setup or just using Cursor with Claude and ChatGPT and LLama… how?

So many cool ideas in this post!

I love how Courtney addressed the stigma around publicly seeking work, how you sought to implement her idea with a tech solution, tinkering with AI to achieve this, and the concrete takeaways from experimenting with multiple tools! 😍

Good ol’ LinkedIn–the last refuge of an unemployed scoundrel. I do like the contrast between #Desperate and a picture depicting a Cheshire-cat grin. Small note: The spacing between the letters looks inconsistent in your examples.

@drodol Yeah, that badge is tricky, cos you never know how the hiring side will see it. I tried it once, didn’t help much with job opportunities I feel.

Oh got nothing local set up for now. I use all my LLMs on browser. Claude Sonnet on Cursor, sometimes GPT-4o. I got Llama 3.1 70b open on https://labs.perplexity.ai in another window, and ChatGPT.com open on another. All very mishmash. I should look into installing a desktop LLM app!

@haideralmosawi oh nice, cool summary of how it went down

@therealbrandonwilson LOL “Chesire cat” - that’s def my signature grin. Yeah I couldnt figure out the inconsistent kerning, not sure why some letters have more spacing than others… something to fix !

@jasonleow holy moly! I never knew about perplexity labs! It’s really cool to know you can try Llama 3.1 70b there! Are you paying for it? Wow! Thanks man!

drodol  •  28 Sept 2024, 8:47 am

@drodol Nope I just use the free version all along haha. Unfortunately sometimes they remove LLMs though… so we don’t have a choice there. Like they used to have Mistral

@jasonleow oh cool! Thanks!
