Quell Take 2

I don't get people who love exercise and going to the gym. I've never identified with that. I'm the guy who wakes up in cold sweats after a nightmare of being back in PE class in high school, and it's shirts vs. skins, and I am on team skins. So, I'm always on the lookout for ways to gamify exercise. As I wrote about previously, I am testing a new gaming system called Quell. Now, you might ask why I would get another gaming system for exercise since I already have the Meta 2. The value proposition of Quell is that it incorporates resistance bands into the mix.

After a stuttering start that required a software update, I was finally able to boot up the game today. With the belt, resistance bands, arm bands, and controllers, it's a bit unwieldy. The Meta 2 wins for ease of use and pinpoint tracking. However, Quell lived up to the hype of resistance training. It is essentially a boxing game, and you face various robot enemies in the game Shardfall. There is also plenty of jumping and squatting. After a short introductory training session, I was already winded enough to call it a day.

While VR ping pong is certainly more fun (and I can last a lot longer), I do like the idea of a game that uses resistance training. I just hope I get over the learning curve quickly so I can start crushing these robots.

Is there an option to play the game(s) without jumping? I’m still overweight and worry about the damage I could be causing my knees. I’m not even sure if I should get back to skip roping. I didn’t think about the knee damage until my nutritionist pointed it out. 😅

I wish. I did find an auto-run feature, which allows me to avoid running in place. I basically just take the hits from those damn robots when there is a cue to jump.
