Reading fiction

I recently listened to Brandon Sanderson’s interview with Tim Ferriss (I probably would have enjoyed watching it, but the video wasn’t available when the podcast was initially released). I listened to the interview because I’m interested in the process of writing, writing as a career, Brandon Sanderson’s success (and what he can afford as a result, such as his home theater), the system he’s built for himself to be prolific while enjoying life, and an exploration of the fantasy genre.

I used to be subscribed to a Sci-Fi and Fantasy book club when I was a teenager. I mostly read books by David Eddings and Terry Goodkind. I was obliged by the subscription to select a number of books every month. Whenever I didn’t know what to choose, they would either send me a book of their choosing or I would pick a random book. It’s funny that I had a book from A Song of Ice and Fire (the book series The Game of Thrones is based on) that I only realized after I became a fan of The Game of Thrones TV series!

The interview ignited in me the desire to get back to reading fantasy. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to dedicate much time to reading these days. Maybe I can pick up the audiobooks to get started, especially since I can listen to them while on the treadmill or walking outdoors.

Have you ever been a fan of fantasy books?

It’s been a while, but I cannot resist uttering one of my famous catchphrases: “Who has time for fiction?!”

@therealbrandonwilson Haha! That phrase popped up in my head (in your Brandonian voice) before you said it 🤣

I’ve been watching that interview in short bursts. Right now Sanderson is recording and uploading the latest lectures from his 2025 Sci Fi and Fantasy class. I’ve been watching those when they come out even though the material repeats much of what he’s already posted from past years.

@Winkletter I started with that series (I’m seeing 3 videos in that playlist so far. The last being a couple of weeks ago). I didn’t go through his entire course before. What I found interesting is that a few people are retaking the course, even though the content is very similar! I guess they see it as a commitment to work on a book. Like joining a gym or an accountability group more than the content itself.

Ah, there is a fourth lecture they didn’t add to the playlist. I think the next lecture has a guest speaker, so I don’t know if that will be on his channel.

I once took a publishing class twice because it was the most practical class I’d ever taken. It was two quarters long and in it you put together the college’s yearly literary magazine. So like with Sanderson’s class, you have something to show for the time even if the credit’s not there.

@Winkletter Thanks! I felt something was off/missing. 😅 The publishing class sounds wonderful!
