Driving lessons: Releasing the way forward

Just had my very first, hands-on-wheels driving lesson today. Fun!

What felt counterintuitive was how I got to release the clutch progressively to move off. Non-drivers might think, push down to go forward (which is what the accelerator does yes), but moving off, it’s the releasing the clutch, baby.

Interestingly I found that the hardest to do.

It mirrors not just my driving but life.

I’m great at hunkering down, pushing hard forward, never quitting, never stopping.

But what happens when the way forward is from releasing and letting go, not gripping harder, grinding longer? I struggle. I falter. I fail. Especially at the start, because I get all psyched up and motivated at the beginning. I can’t wait to start and blast off, not release!

So there we have it.

A life lesson in the most mundane of a daily life event.

Release the way forward.

Learning how to drive with a manual stick shift? That’s the way I learned!
