Right attention

I was practising driving last Sunday. Usually I get a little nervous, still being new and all. But something cropped up. I realized the fuel tank was low. The previous guy who rented it didn’t top it up! Suddenly, my focus went from watching the road nervously to carving out a part of it to think ahead of how to get to the nearest petrol station.

Funny thing is, because I was slightly less focused, I ironically got less nervous and drove more normally. That didn’t hit me until I ended my session.

How strange.

But it’s so true, isn’t it? Like they say, everything in moderation.

Too little attention, you get careless, forgetful, even dangerous.
Too much attention, you overthink, second-guess, get obsessive, even neurotic.

What I truly needed:
Just the right amount of attention to the maximum enjoyment of the task at hand.

This post is not about driving.
