Search suggestion banned on Twitter

Man this sucks… Got hit by a search suggestion ban.

A search suggestion ban is:

“This type of ban causes an account to not populate search suggestions and people search results when it is searched for while being logged out. Twitter seems to take tie strength or a similar metric into account. While an account may be suggested to users you are strongly tied to, it may not be shown to others.”

So basically it means less new people will discover my account, which means follower growth is impacted. Which aligns to what I’m observing. But my current followers should still see my tweets. It’s not hidden unlike my shadowban last month when people couldn’t see my tweets unless they had the direct URL.

Not Twitter jail like last month, but ‘handcuffed’.

Not sure why but I smelled something was wrong when my engagement tanked in the last week. And even after I intentionally spent half a day engaging with other accounts and overall being a good Twitter user, it didn’t seem to improve. So that prompted me to check using the shadowban tool. I used another account to double check if my username pops up, and true enough:

Right now, there’s nothing much I can do except to try to clean up content which might caused this, and then just wait.

Some things I did to clean up:

  • Competing platforms’ names and URLs. I had a reply tweet to @levelsio that went semi-viral (11k impressions), and it contained a link to Tiktok. So had to bite the bullet to delete it and see if it helps.
  • Deleted new followers which are porn/bot accounts, or a combination of new accounts with no profile pic, no posts, had default account handles, no profile bio, or posted suspicious content.
  • Interacting with low reputation accounts. I scrolled back on my tweets and replies and checked each accounts to see if I had engaged with any such accounts. Had to delete a few which were either new (account created in the last few months), had bad follower:following ratio, or posted content which are controversial or against community guidelines. Frankly I hate this. I mean, I’m fine killing interaction if the account does hate speech or is a toxic troll. But follower:following ratio? How new the account is? It’s insane I have to be careful who I interact with in those aspects and one wrong move you get pulled down alongside it.
  • Tweeting too much. I was tweeting 3-4 times per day. Went back to my profile page to delete some to have just 1 tweet a day, max 2. Deleted some video memes too.
  • I probably shouldn’t spend too much time engaging or tweeting in case that counts a s spam. Less than 1h per session.
  • Also heard mispellings and using unsafe URLs get some demerit points. Going to go back and check.

What else can I do to get out of this search suggestion ban?

Final words: I hate that this happens without notice, without explanation. I didn’t even bother contacting support, because I know they won’t care. And get this: I’m a verified, blue-checked, paying customer. It sucks that I’m paying for a service and all I get is such poor service quality. If it weren’t for the sunk costs, and the other learning and social benefits of Twitter, I would have walked away.

Sigh. <sarcasm>I’m so glad your free speech is being protected on X.</sarcasm>
