Selling snowballs on a snowy day

I tweeted a joke about selling snowballs on a snowy day:

Completely made in jest. But stepping back, that got me thinking… why not, though? What’s wrong with selling snowballs on a snowy day? Is it as bad as it sounds, like selling ice to eskimos, or selling seashells by the sea shore?

Because I can think of a few reasons why people might want to buy snowballs on a snowy day.

Maybe it’s a service where people can pay for so that they can focus on the fun part (the snowball throwing and fighting), instead of the less fun part of running out of snowballs at the critical moment in battle, and having to make them.
Maybe you can organize a snowball fight festival and need enough snowballs for all the participants.
Maybe a group of people—perhaps with disabilities, using a wheelchair, or seniors with back problems—are unable to reach down to the ground to make snowballs, and you’re helping them be able enjoy snowball fights despite having challenges.

See see? In just a few minutes, what was a joke and ridiculous idea became something that sounded somewhat possible. All it needed was finding a niche audience who actually needs/wants it.

That’s the thing about indie hacking. All too often, we (I) have ideas, and we brush them off like selling snowballs on a snowy day. But dig deeper, and we might discover something with potential.

So don’t be too quick to write off silly ideas. They might just open a window to something delightful.
