Sports fans

Every time I hear someone in a meeting mention soccer or the World Cup, I think, "Oh yah, that's going on." First of all, soccer isn't as big a sport in the US as it is everywhere else in the world. We've got our NFL, MLB, and NBA, thank you very much. Then again, I'm not into any of those sports either.

I watched a training session recently in which the speaker confessed that he is a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan, as hopeless as that may seem. Hopeless because they haven't won a championship in a long time and don't appear to have any prospects of another one any time soon. So if a team is winning or has a chance to win a championship, then that's when it's okay to be a fan? I thought that was called a "fair weather fan" or being on the bandwagon.

He brought up the idea because he said human beings are tribal, and we can use it to our advantage. Just as people are into their sports teams, they can also be into a community you create within your own team or business. You give your team a name. Maybe a logo. Maybe everybody gets shirts. At least this team has a purpose, and the outcome directly impacts you. If some sports team wins or loses, it does nothing for me. That said, always root for the home team to win because at least everyone around you has the potential to be in a better mood.
