Stop at 80%, revisited

I wrote in 2021 about this:

There’s a Japanese concept to eating called hara hachi bu, translated to be “Eat till you’re 80% full”.

Got me thinking: What if I did this for indie hacking?

  • Instead of doing 100% of my endless to-dos, I just do 80%
  • Instead of finishing a task up, I leave 20% to come back to and be motivated by (to complete it)
  • Instead of working 10h out of 10h available, I work for 8h and end the day with my tank not empty, not exhausted, less likely to burn out
  • Instead of stretch goals, I have chill goals of having to restrain myself to hit 80%, so that I don’t over-tire myself.
  • Instead of delivering on work at 110%, I deliver at 80% - still good work, but I leave some of myself, my sanity, my energy, for myself, or my family.

Hara hachi bu.

Great philosophy beyond food! I remember Tim Ferriss mentioning athletes using a similar philosophy of not trying to go all in on their effort and ended up achieving better results.
