The little things

It’s the little things that I’m going to miss, if I ever have to go back to a 9-5.
Things like carrying my son to school in the morning, smelling his hair, chatting with him along the way, sometimes having little laughs.
Picking him up from school later, and watching him run and play carefree at the playground with the other kids.
Walking with him to McDonald’s after to have a Happy Meal, having a chat about random things as you would with a toddler.
Then going to the supermarket to play grocery shopping. I said play, because I don’t really need anything. It’s just fun to let him play adult and run down the aisles with a trolley basket, picking up some nuts, a tiny packet of sweets, a kid’s sized bottle of mineral water.
Things like going to the bakery with him, giving him some dollar notes, and getting him to pay. The counter staff never fails to be amused.
Heading home, playing some more together. Later, giving him a bath, and we marvel over bubbles.
Then, family nap time, a little snooze for me while mother and child nap till late afternoon.
All these little things. Almost insignificant, these tiny daily chores.
But chores they aren’t.
Because when you feel like you’ll heartache for them after it’s gone, it’s no chore indeed.
I wish it wouldn’t come to pass.
Praying and working real hard to make sure I get to enjoy these little things, for years to come.
I hope.

@drodol Thanks dude. Appreciate the kind words 💚 Yeah the typical work routine here for those on 9am-6pm work days on site is go to work before the kids are awake, then come back by 7-8pm, with only 1-2h of time with them. Maybe things are slightly better these days with hybrid work, so I might get some days working from home. But with a push to return to office, I’m not optimistic about it.

@jasonleow it’s a little heartbreaking to read about some of the things you will miss.
It begs me to ask about the work culture in Singapore.
Would it be that bad you’ll lose the ability to take your kid to school and later go shopping with him afterwards?
I wouldn’t want a 9-5 if that were the case, so I don’t blame you!
