The sounds of non-silence

After I sign off today, I will be able to take a break from an incessant sound that has been plaguing me for the better part of the year.

I have two laptops for work: one is my company's laptop and the other is my client's laptop. I've been with my client for almost four years now, and the laptop has been fine except for an annoying noise that started about a year ago. I believe that one of the cooling fans went out, which is causing the other fan to work overtime. From the moment I boot up the computer until I shut it down, I put up with a very annoying buzz that sounds like a drone that's about ready to take off.

I'm sure your answer is to contact the client's IT department and get a replacement. Unfortunately, that is a no-go. Last year, my client changed its equipment policy and no longer issues or maintains equipment. Consultants who onboarded after the changeover are using a virtual desktop, which is apparently a bear to work with. Consultants like me who still have client laptops were grandfathered in to keep using them with the proviso that no support would be provided. I'm stuck with this laptop until it gives out, in which case I'll be forced to use the virtual desktop with my company's laptop, which is noticeably slower albeit quieter.
