The thing you avoid is the thing you need

You know… that thing you know you should be doing but have been avoiding doing all this time?

It might just be the very thing you need now.

True story: I used to rock climb. I enjoyed it, the outdoors aspect of it, the physicality. So when it came to training for endurance, I got bored. So I avoided doing that work. I knew I had to, but never did. But my climbing stagnated. Time and again, it always came back to endurance. After many years, I finally decided to do it. And my performance jumped.

Moral of the story? The very task that keeps coming back to haunt you is the very thing you might need for that breakthrough you’ve been seeking.

So what’s that thing for my indie hacking?

Doing SEO research.

I’ve got a browser tab of Danny Postma’s SEO thread open for a year, sitting idle waiting for me to act.

What if SEO research is exactly what I need to find the right experiments to work on?

I think it’s time to just do the fking thing

I am pondering the difference between “rock climb” and “climb rocks.” Essentially, both phrases say the same thing, but the former implies a structured activity vs. a random act. And better you than me for SEO research. Hard pass on that one.

SOMETIMES what you avoid you avoid because you feel like you HAVE to do it and not WANT to do it. So reminding yourself that the have-to aligns with the outcome you want can make you want it, as well. You don’t want to do endurance exercises, but you do want to up your climbing game. That becomes the motivator.

And if we’re not convinced that the “have to” is even worth it, it’s very likely we’ll avoid it.

@haideralmosawi YES! That’s exactly what made me finally do it. Cos the frustration, and wanting to breakthrough my climbing game
