Vital Fest Day 2

Vital Fest proper is in the books. I'm attending a follow-up event today from 10 to 2, but I wanted to share a few thoughts from the last two days.

I'm starting to think I've had it too easy. When I hear the stories of the leaders on stage about physical/sexual abuse, addiction, homelessness, and many other adversities, it's obvious that I've had a mostly charmed life by comparison. And it's obvious that, in general, life in the United States is more privileged than in many other countries. So what's my problem, and why am I not more successful?

Most of the training this weekend focused on mindset and leadership. I used to think, why bother studying leadership since I'm no longer in a "leadership" role at an organization? Here's the thing: we're all leaders because leadership starts with leading yourself.

"The mind that looks for excuses finds obstacles. The mind that looks for solutions finds the way forward."

You can't meet the right people if you are never around them. Don't enter a room looking for what you can get. Instead of asking, "What can this person do for me?" ask, "What can I bring to this person?"

Some people say your network is your net worth. The value you bring to your network determines your net worth.

Consistency builds momentum. What is your Daily Method of Operation (DMO)?

  • What does your calendar look like?
  • What is your personal system?
  • Morning routines
  • Time blocks

So much more to distill for my newsletter recap.

I’ve been thinking about leadership during my deep dive into Kitchen Nightmares. In the show the failing restaurants are full of depressed people suffering from learned helplessness and the solution requires one person to step up and set a new agenda. That one person can reenergize everyone else. Leadership might be the power to not feel helpless in the face of complex problems.
