Why are mechanical keyboards fun to use?

Weren’t mechanical keyboards just keyboards a decade ago!? How come they made a comeback as some fancy tech device!? I wanted to create for myself a writing station where I only work on writing projects and I was magically drawn to getting a mechanical keyboard. As if writing will not do unless I can hear every letter being entered into the computer.

But why!?

I couldn’t resist the gravitational pull of mechanical keyboards but I still don’t understand what drew me to them.

Am I imagining a serious writer using a typewriter and the best I could do was to hear the clacking sound on a mechanical keyboard?

It boggles the mind, but this post was fun to write on my mechanical keyboard. I didn’t go overboard with the super expensive options, but I’m also tempted to know what makes those ones a lot better than the one I got. Or is that just a marketing ploy to give the impression they are better.

Does anyone here use a fancy shmancy mechanical keyboard? Is it worth it?

I’m sure @jasonleow will chime in. Mechanical keyboards don’t do much for me. The sound is more annoying than satisfying.

A mechanical keyboard is the muscle car of the nerd world—totally unnecessary and obnoxiously loud. With keyboards the industry focused on innovations that brought down price. I grew up using the classic mechanical keyboards and the feel is very different from cheap membrane keyboards. While I wouldn’t bring my clicky keyboard to an office with other people around, at home it brings me some joy to feel that tactile and audible feedback. I also love its double shot keycaps with a big, retro font set into beige and dark-beige keys that won’t fade.

@therealbrandonwilson @Winkletter I’m not using my mechanical keyboard around others, but I find the loud noises enjoyable when I’m by myself. As if I’m a serious writer. 🤣

@therealbrandonwilson thanks for the nudge. I’m BACK!!

@haideralmosawi Mech kb fan here! 🙋🏻‍♂️ I love it. It’s the sound and the tactile feel. I personally prefer the deeper thock sound for keyboards than the sharper clack sounds. Which mech kb are you using? I got Keychron C1. Recently added a fun keycap haha!

Btw, do you know you can turn on keyboard sounds when writing on Lifelog?

@jasonleow Haha! I’m new to this and didn’t realize fun keycaps are a thing! 🤣

I got this Porodo keyboard. Not sure how it compares to others. I just remembered I saw the option to turn keyboard sounds on! I’ll give it a try!

@haideralmosawi Haha yes. Google “artisan key caps”

Oooh that Porodo kb looks sweet. Similar design to Keychron. I hate this hobby haha. Every kb even the MBP one since getting my first mech kb feels flat and lifeless and boring… and the next kb purchase is always more expensive 😅

@jasonleow I should’ve known this is going to be an expensive hobby 🤣
