Why are you still here on Lifelog?

What looks like consistency and commitment can sometimes be fear in disguise. Are you sticking with it because it still serves you or because it’s what you already know? – James Clear

Wow I feel attacked. But in a good way. What a powerful question, especially for me, the consistency guy. And maybe for us Lifeloggers there too.

Are you still doing this because it serves you? Does writing help you still? Or are you just here because of the streak? The deep why versus the immediate what.

For me, it absolutely still serves me.

I write to think. And every week, month, year, I’m trying to figure out different things, trying to solve different challenges (or same!), or just in new seasons and stages of life.

There’s always new sh*t happening that needs thinking through by writing.

But of course, it’s not black or white, not either it serves you or it doesn’t.

On dry days when I have nothing to say or think about, the streak, the commitment, keeps me going, gets me to still show up. And usually I would discover I do have something to say or to figure out. Or it would come after a few days. It pulses and pauses.

So, why are you still here?

The best analogy I have is brushing teeth. Why still brush your teeth? Because there are consequences if you don’t.

I write here in particular because it works. It’s not so private that I feel no purpose, but not so public that it gets lost. As for writing in general, it helps me think about my present, imagine future possibilities, and remember my past.

@therealbrandonwilson I love that analogy. Often liken my own writing habit to that too! It’s mental hygiene now… can’t stop, won’t stop.

@knight That’s basically it. The time hops are so fun to read.

@Winkletter Oh yeah very true i like thew pseudo openness of Lifelog. It’s like a quiet corner in a cafe for a group of friends… public view but private enough! Love the past/present/future description… couldn’t have said it better myself
