Making changes to my office

There are a few things that make me feel uncomfortable when I’m in my office. I’m not exactly sure what they are. There’s usually a nagging feeling to organize and fix things (and there are LOTS of things I can organize and fix). I often feel drowsy when I’m in the office. I find it difficult to have food in the office, especially this time of year, because the kitchen gets really hot.

I’m making 2 basic changes to the office, in the hope it’ll improve the environment and allow me to spend more productive hours here.

The 2 changes are:

1- Installing 2 more bookshelves to organize my books. The bookshelves will also serve as my YouTube/Instagram background, and I can have a few shelves to house project documents (book manuscripts, etc). I already bought these and I’m waiting for them to install them on Thursday

2- Installing curtains. I have metal shutters that are always down and no curtains. I THINK the windows in the living room (which I use as my office) overlook my neighbors’ courtyard. So I want to give them and myself privacy with the curtains, while also allowing some sunlight in. I already installed blinds in the kitchen today, which I hope will protect the kitchen from the heat. It has a print of my children when they were young, which is looking adorable. I’m still waiting for the curtain company to confirm when they can install the other curtains

But as I mentioned in yesterday’s post on the obstacle being the way, I don’t want the obstacle (my office not being ideal for work) to distract me from the result I’m seeking (wanting to direct my attention to the projects I want to complete). But I plan to work in parallel between improving my environments to support my activities (doing work, being healthy, spending time with the fam, etc) and doing the things that actually move my life forward.

Do you find yourself optimizing more than executing? How do you strike a balance between the two?

Comments

I lean more the other way…executing in messy or less-than-ideal environments. Somehow, the clutter doesn’t bother me even though some will argue it is affecting me, if subconsciously.

@therealbrandonwilson That’s great! Dealing with the clutter, in your situation, might lead to marginal gains, if you’re not bothered by it. 😃👍🏻
