Driving lessons X: I passed, finally

jasonleow • 28 Dec 2025 •
I just passed my driving test on first try. I finally got my license.
But I feel only relief. That it’s over.
When you passed and it’s more of a relief than joy, you know the whole experience of the thing you just passed for is broken.
To start with, I never wanted to own a car, or was interested in driving. I prefer to be driven, and just sit back, chill, or nap in the passenger seat. I don’t think I ever would want to drive, until now with a family and thinking of moving overseas.
So I do what’s necessary as a man, husband, father, provider.
Started off being somewhat enthusiastic about learning driving, but over the first 1-2 months and meeting my fair share of really unprofessional and outright rude instructors, I started to dread going. Every time I drove in that school car, I would just get nervous. The imprint is there even if the instructor of the day was fine.
But there was too much sunk costs. So just had to grit through it.
I’m just so relieved now that it’s over.
With a learning experience this bad, thankfully you just need to go through once in your life.
So there… Ten driving lessons:
- Driving lessons: Releasing the way forward
- Driving lessons II: Medium wins
- Driving lessons III: Feather paws
- Driving lessons IV - Blindspots
- Driving lessons V: Driving on anyway
- Driving lessons VI: Turn at the mango
- Driving lessons VII: Instinct > formula
- Driving lessons VIII: The lesson of no lesson
- Driving lessons IX: Slow doesn’t mean safe
- Driving lessons X: I passed, finally
A nice neat ending for the year, to an otherwise fked up journey.

Oh woooow. Thank you so much @Winkletter! I love the watercolor paintings! Softens things up. And kinda surprised in a pleasant way that Gemini gave a brighter, more optimistic reading of the end than I did.

@jasonleow Optimism might be the default, but it could also have been my prompt since I asked for the “big generalizable lessons” rather than a summary.

Congrats on getting your license!

Thanks @phaidenbauer!

Here’s a video recapping the journey.
